Holidays May Come and Go

December 6, 2019

Dear Subscriber:

Each week we examine a theme from a variety of points of view. The theme for this week as we enter the holiday season is Happy Holidays.

I welcome comments on my poems at http://nicholasgordon.blogspot.com .

A Happy Holidays poem about how time is relative to love:

Holidays may come and go
And moments last forever.
Praised be those whom love combines,
Passing time together.
Years are days, days are years,
However short or long.
One measures time in holidays,
Lilting into song.
In love there is a levity
Distinct from jokes or laughter,
A lifting up of life, a lightness
Yearning ever after,
Still full of joy-to-be.

Hold Within Your Heart Some Happy Tears

December 5, 2019

Dear Subscriber:

A Happy Holidays poem about the need for and uses of happy tears:

Hold within your heart some happy tears,
And let them irrigate your desert days.
Plant some roses in among your fears,
Placed to add some grace to every gaze.
Your love is rain and sunshine to your world.
Happiness follows from the gift of giving.
On your ramparts leave your flag unfurled --
Let the wind proclaim your joy in living!
In holidays find cause for celebration,
Dancing to the old, familiar tunes,
As time needs now and then a well-timed station,
Yielding to accommodate relation,
Stopping for some cheer as winter looms.

A Happy Holidays poem to a child, imagining a variety of animals enjoying the holidays:

Elephants love holidays,
And camels, rhinos, sharks,
Free to play all day in playgrounds,
Free to run in parks.

Buffaloes love holidays,
And bears and wolves and deer.
Their families get together then,
With all their loved ones near.

Triceratops love holidays,
And little girls and boys,
‘Cause that’s when they get presents, and
Can play with their new toys!

Happy Holidays to You and Yours

Dear Subscriber:

A Happy Holidays poem about the holidays as a meeting place of generations both alive and dead:

Happy holidays to you and yours!
A wish for days of laughter, love, and pleasure.
Perhaps your lives could profit from the pause.
Perhaps you'll use the time to count your treasure.
Years of holidays enrich the heart,
Holding memories that do not fade.
Old times blend with new through homespun art,
Long savored as the rituals are replayed.
In holidays the generations meet.
Departed souls take once again their places,
Alive as once again the words repeat,
Yielding galleries of once-grieved faces
Singing with us, indistinct but sweet.

Have No Fear of Eco-Holocaust

A Happy Holidays poem imagining a guardian angel protecting against an eco-holocaust:

Have no fear of eco-holocaust!
An angel is assigned to make things right,
Poised above the heavens day and night,
Precisely placed to pinpoint what is lost.
You needn't worry – he or she will know,
Having overseen such things before
On other worlds distressed by waste or war,
Like Agttth and Wukttth, just what will work below.
In these days of joyful celebration,
Do, then, for contentment find a cause
As real as fuel-less flames or Santa Claus,
Yielding holiday hope for Earth's salvation,
So long as angels rewrite nature’s laws!

Fulfillment Is a Song That One Must Sing

December 1, 2019

Dear Subscriber:

Each week we examine a theme from a variety of points of view. The theme for this week is The Gifts of Life, in honor of Thanksgiving, which this year is celebrated on Thursday, November 28.

I welcome comments on my poems at http://nicholasgordon.blogspot.com .

A philosophical number poem about the effort needed to sustain one’s gifts:

Fulfillment is a song that one must sing
Or bear the sullen silence of the heart.
Remember: Love of life requires music,
The joy one dances to throughout the day,
Yearning for the gifts one has sustained.

Every gift is one that one must bring
Into one’s daily life with skill and art,
Giver and receiver both, or lose it,
Having lost a few along the way,
Though treasuring still the ones one has retained.

Salvation Is a Song That One Can Sing

November 30, 2019

I welcome comments on my poems at http://nicholasgordon.blogspot.com .

A philosophical number poem about the gift of art:

Salvation is a song that one can sing,
Evangelist upon the shores of beauty,
Voice upon the void, one’s words or no,
Etched upon the silent undertow,
Neither simply sweet nor merely pretty,
The gift of grace, there for rendering,
Yielding something more than fortune’s flow.

One goes about one’s daily round of duty
Not wholly in the world of time and things,
Enchanted by what comes from where none go.
