Estimated Wait Time Is Forever

A poem for Eid al-Fitr, which occurs at the end of Ramadan, about faith as a journey rather than a visitation.

Estimated wait time is forever.
In faith, The Moment neither comes nor goes.
Does one dress one's thoughts in what seems clever,
Allowing for a frequent change of clothes?
Let love translate for your timeless soul.
Faith's a journey, not a visitation.
If one would risk a purpose and a role,
Then one should live by love's interpretation,
Rendering each partial person whole.

Evening, and at last the fast is over!
It remains a gift we celebrate,
Delighting in our prayers as in a lover,
Abstaining with a joy no meal could sate.
Let us gather now with food and drink,
For now we turn again to mortal Earth,
Intended to desire, and love, and think,
To savor what is ours 'twixt death and birth,
Reminded by our faith what things are worth.

Aisha is a model Muslim woman:
Intelligent, loving, faithful, modest, kind;
Serving selflessly the words of Islam,
Having held them long in heart and mind;
A soul that seeks, yet knows what it will find.

Return to the sweet discipline of faith!
A ritual is rich in grace and feeling.
Make yourself a servant that you might
Attend with less of will and more of sight,
Doing what is asked, not what's appealing,
Alive with light, free of want and hate.
Nor does one moment pass that is not healing.

Even sacrifice may not be pure,
Intended for the eye and not the heart.
Do, then, out of love make sacrifice
As Abraham once offered up his son.
Love of Allah is what will endure
As fire consumes each lacerated part,
Devouring all but love, that will suffice
However long the sacrifice goes on,
As years and lives through time's cold fingers run.
