This Will Not Work if You Don't Want to Try

April 9, 2021

Dear Subscriber:

Each week we examine a theme from a variety of points of view. The theme for this week is troubled loves.

I welcome comments on my poems at https://nicholasgordon.blogspot.com.

A love poem to a spouse in the midst of marital difficulty:

This will not work if you don't want to try.
There is no way to love except to choose.
You cannot go through people as through shoes:
With each love lost a bit of you must die.
We are all yours, the three of us, and I
Still love you though I know that I may lose.
My love is there to answer or refuse;
I wait upon your definite reply.
Do not say yes for any sake but yours,
Nor sacrifice your happiness for duty,
Nor swim against the current of your will.
But you will find abundance on these shores,
And in your love a more abiding beauty
Than any that might barren hunger still.

Here's to Chey and Cory

January 2, 2021

Dear Subscriber:

Each week we examine a theme from a variety of points of view. The theme for this week in honor of the new year is new beginnings.

I welcome comments on my poems at https://nicholasgordon.blogspot.com.

A wedding poem in the form of a toast to a couple with a child about to begin a new life:

Here's to Chey and Cory!
To a long and happy life
In an Eden of their making
As a husband and a wife.

Here's to Chey and Cory!
To the passion and the will
That has brought them here together:
May it long sustain them still!

Here's to Chey and Cory!
And to Adria - all three!
And to the grace and courage
That creates a family.

May they love each other
With a love that binds them fast
To the things in life that matter
And the ecstasies that last.

I do not understand why you don't love me.
You loved me once. What changed? What did I do?
Your eyes are mirrors in which I can't see me.
Your lips are closed, a door I can't pass through.
For years we shared our bodies, thoughts, and lives.
Now we lie at night encased in stone.
Something's turned the simplest words to knives.
I live with you, and yet I live alone.
I do not want to be the one who leaves.
After all, I'm not the one who changed.
But dead is dead, and for the one who grieves,
The loved one should be gone, not just estranged.
You say that nothing's wrong and all is well,
But I well know the truth you will not tell.

Happy third anniversary!
A time for celebration and reflection.
Praised be those who live as they believe,
Pursuing through each act some deep connection.
Years refine what none can grasp or see.

There is in every love not two but three:
Happiness requires consecration,
Requires some sweet angel both conceive
Equally, the child of their relation,
Elf of the heart, who binds them spiritually.
