ABNER/ABNER

Abner likes to do what is expected,
Being in agreement with the rules.
Now and then, of course, he feels rejected,
Even though no duty is neglected,
Restored by thinking pride is meant for fools.

Abner likes to do the unexpected,
Being in rebellion against rules.
Now and then, of course, he feels neglected,
Even though no outrage is rejected,
Restored by thinking most of us are fools.

Forty can't believe that she is forty.
OMG! Already? It can't be!
Recently seems much more recently.
Though centuries ago, when she was thirty,
Years stretched ahead as far as she could see.

You are not, will not, do not what you dream.
One accepts that one cannot be pure.
Moreover, there are sins you would redeem,
Knowing that your world remains secure.
In you there is a longing to be known,
Peered right through, as sun lights up a room,
Perhaps just as you promise to atone,
Understood and loved by One whose doom
Remains wet, not yet hardened into stone.

Poem of the Week

October 2, 2008 #502

GREED GRIPS EVERY HEART, NO LESS THAN LUST

Greed grips every heart, no less than lust.
Reason drowns in fantasies of power.
Even though the journey ends in dust,
Each finds ample cravings in the hour,
Destined to dark seeds that root and flower.

Given that we're happy to be here,
Remember what we're gaining and we're losing.
Admittedly, the moment is confusing,
Demanding sad farewells and well-earned cheer.
Underneath the moment is the motion,
A silent passage out to open sea,
Taking place regardless what may be
In front of us, a ritual commotion.
Of what we are, but little will remain,
Nor will we ever come this way again.
