There'll never be a better time than now,
When all the world's before us, yet unseen.
We haven't made the choices that define us,
But we are grown and ready to begin.

Nostalgic in advance, we know well how
We'll miss this place, our friends, and all that's been
Precious to us here, when time will find us
Far away, with much that's changed within.

Can we stop to realize just how good
A time this is, as it's about to end?
Despite our troubles, heartaches, fears, and hungers,
It is a moment most of us will treasure.

But nothing can be fully understood
Except in hindsight, which will comprehend
The beauty that now runs between our fingers,
And savor it with longing and with pleasure.

Give a little thought to what comes next.
Remember: education isn't training.
A person needs to struggle with a text,
Delving into truths beyond explaining.
Understanding means you must go under,
And make your own the ground on which you stand.
The urge to learn comes from a sense of wonder
Ill-served in those who like their knowledge canned.
Open up your mind so that your soul
Not be confined to one small, shallow bowl.

Congratulations on your graduation,
Opening a door not easily reached!
Now go through it: on the other side
Great mountains become hills, and then just fields
Rolling eastward towards a rising sun.
All now is success and celebration,
The music of deeds done and barriers breached.
Underneath, uncertainties still glide
Lean and hungry as the sweet day yields,
And golden moments through your fingers run.
The rock on which you stand is your creation,
Illustrating what your teachers preached
Of learning and the provenance of pride.
Nor need you fear the wind, as knowledge shields
Such as earn it from what storms may come.

Given that we're happy to be here,
Remember what we're gaining and we're losing.
Admittedly, the moment is confusing,
Demanding sad farewells and well-earned cheer.
Underneath the moment is the motion,
A silent passage out to open sea,
Taking place regardless what may be
In front of us, a ritual commotion.
Of what we are, but little will remain,
Nor will we ever come this way again.
