Hints of Heaven, hints of Hell,
As the year turns again.
Perhaps with you all is well,
Perhaps you are in constant pain.
Years come and go, millennia --
Nothing changes in the heart.
Each revolution's trivia;
We play new clad the same old part.
Years come and go, each as bad,
Each as good as those before,
As full of joy, as cruel, as sad,
Returning as we hope once more.

Here's to health and happiness!
A toast to the New Year!
Peace and joy to all of us!
Prosperity and cheer!
Years come and go, some bad, some good.
New years provide the space,
Each to fill with what one would,
Windows onto grace.
Years come and go, yet still we toast
Each one, for each one seems
As though it were a new-found coast,
Rich with hope and dreams.

Note: I will be away from Jan.1 – Jan. 11. The next poem of the week will be emailed on Thursday, Jan. 15.

Hope is not a harbinger of peace
As countless holocausts have made quite clear.
Perhaps the unsolved problem is that fear
Prevents the heart from seeking its release.
Years pass; we come no closer to the good,
Nor do we better understand why we
Each year have hope to live in harmony
While watering our fields with tears and blood.
Yet hope remains, and love, that hope revives.
Each knows well that hatred is insane,
And hates and fears and loves and hates again,
Resolving ever to keep hope alive.
